Residence Registration in Shenzhen: Police Station Visit Within 24 Hours (Work Visa Guide)

Updated: 2026-11-07 · 3 min read

Why registration is mandatory

Chinese law requires every foreign national to register their place of residence within 24 hours of arrival. Hotel guests are registered automatically; apartment tenants must do it themselves at the police station serving their compound.

This registration feeds directly into your residence permit: when you apply for or renew a work visa, the authorities check that your registered address matches where you actually live.

What to bring

Take your passport (with the latest entry stamp and visa), your lease contract, and ideally the landlord’s property deed copy or ID details. If your lease is bilingual and properly signed, the counter process usually takes minutes.

As a real example from our current catalogue: Modern 2-bedroom 2-bathroom apartment at Evergrande Tianjing, Nanyou Nanshan — Modern 2, 2 bedrooms, 83 sqm, ¥11,500/month. Every apartment we list is checked for police-registration eligibility before it goes online.

Common problems — and how we prevent them

The most common failure is a landlord who never registered the apartment for rental, so the address cannot be linked to you. We screen every apartment we list for exactly this: if a home cannot pass police registration, it does not enter our catalogue.

If you move to a second apartment in the same city, you must register again at the new address. The registration is free of charge.
